Description:

"What remains?" is a multimedia artwork. It's a creation of a scene of destruction. The scene of destruction displays a ruin that's the result of an act of arson. It is a scene of the remains of a house-fire. Through the process of creation the artist comments on what remains after the art-making process as a process of destruction, a process in which the artist has also used charcoal and oil paint to create the remains of human-caused destruction. In this scene we also see ceramics used daily for domestic purposes which brings a personal emotional aspect into play. This shows the emotional and personal loss not just of a house as something material but of a home, a lifestyle, of memories.

The artist creates a link between the man-made structure of the house and the personal man-made content of the house. This link demonstrates how we build memories and experiences through daily routines and how these routines and mental structures, what happens between these cement walls, become an important part of the structures of a house.

What remains is the destruction of creation and the creation of destruction through the art process and what remains are not only traces of a life once lived but also traces of the artist's destructive creation and the viewer being witness and contributing to the continuous process of destruction and creation.
