"It's the things that unconsciously move me that I gather. I find them portrayed in my art. As an architect I have always been fascinated with the power of textures and surfaces, with the way they age and change over time. I think it is these qualities that move me to keep on mapping, drawing and recording the world around me in different mediums. I am fascinated with time and its cyclical and repetitive character."

Martie was born on 26 May 1968 in Tzaneen. In 1991 she obtained a B.Arch degree (in architecture) and in 1998 her M.Arch degree at the University of the Free State. She has 23 years' experience as lecturer at different tertiary institutions in the Free State and Gauteng.

Growing up in an artistic environment, art has always been one of her passions and she is skilled in various media, of which watercolour, acrylic, pencil and collage have been favourites. Since 2004 Martie has started working in pewter and metal as medium.

She is currently a senior lecturer in Architecture at the University of the Free State, while spending as much time as possible fitting her art into a full life with her family.

Her etch titled 'The deeper unknown' was selected for the 2016 Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition's exhibition in Oliewenhuis Art Museum.
