Description:
There has been an exodus, an inside-out Great Trek of sorts. Roughly 25 000 skilled South Africans pack up their lives and their homes and their children every year and leave. They leave with hope, but not certainty. Things have to be better elsewhere, surely. They shut their eyes tight to what they know and love, and say goodbye. Since 2009, more than 400 000 South Africans have chosen to repatriate. It doesn’t exactly tip the scales, but still. They make their way back, much in the same way they left - uncertain, but hopeful. Is it a change of heart that turns them back? Is it family, friends and familiarity? Is it the realisation that there’s no such thing as perfect? Because the destination hasn’t changed, so, perhaps, the change was in them?
