Varkoorlede
2019 Competition entry
Detail
Tags
Johannes Botma
Details:
Signed
Etching and embossing
R3 500
Description:
Varkoorlede speaks to the absurdities of the wave of xenophobic violence that has again hit South Africa in September 2019.
The work shows a post-apocalyptic cityscape of Bloemfontein’s inner city. There are no recognisable human figures with the landscape itself slowly transforming into rubble as the road stretches forward. The embossing of the varkoor (Arum lily) has a contradictory meaning in terms of it is a flower that is often given as a congratulatory gift, but also one that is used at funerals. Are we celebrating the victory of chasing people out of the country or are we mourning the countries loss and the death left in the wake of these xenophobic attacks?
