Description:

The central idea to this work is that lines are being crossed. It serves as a sort of deromanticising of marriage. Two different words and perspectives are being tied across boundaries, into a unit. The two animals represent two different persons who are crossing boundaries and entering marriage. The artwork serves as a sort of unconventional marriage contract, especially because the people within the marriage know about the symbolic meaning behind the animals.

The fragility and impermanent nature of life are illustrated by way of the crumpled paper. The large size of the elephant in comparison with the small size of the penguin also points to the vulnerability of relationships. The effect is however softened to a degree, seeing as the two animals are not in relation to their actual sizes. This points to the complaisance that exists in the marital relationship.

Language is also illustrated in the artwork. The suggestions of language and the complexity and almost illegibility of it is also an indication of the communication and miscommunication that can arise in relationships.

Lastly it can be seen that these two animals have a type of interaction with one another, which points to the compatibility of these contrasting individuals.
