Description:
My recent work is preoccupied with the notion that socially discernible thought patterns can be conveyed through kinetic and gestural metaphor. When developing a concept, I attempt to get to the heart of what something ‘feels like’, ‘functions like’. I try to convey these impressions by prompting the viewer to physically play out gestures and movements that are linked to the artwork’s conceptual framework.
Moral Compass prompts physical and tactile participation. Viewers need to hand and tough it in order to manipulate the silver ball through path ways. In this way Moral Compass invites the viewer to revisit the fascination and beguilement that touching and manipulating toys, puzzles and games held as a child, while conveying the slippery sensation of finding one’s moral way amongst a myriad of signifiers and opinions. If we map out all the instances where intensions diverged according to ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ as a visual representation what would a person’s mind frame around a contested issue look like? What would you be able to discern about them? Or perhaps in handling the compass, the viewer can follow the quicksilver movement of the ball through the labyrinth towards a transient moral state.
