Roses and other flowers for rocks and Molotov

Description:
In the painting we see a group of people hurling bouquets as “weapons” of communication to the authorities, instead of rocks and other objects usually thrown at the properties and other targets during violent protests.

The work seeks to post a question:  Is it absolutely necessary that people throw rocks and set things alight in order for them to make their point?  What would happen if they were to throw eggs instead?  Or flowers?  Or throw nothing at all but just talk and implement?

This is a fantasy inspired piece where the painter has used his own imagination, external references as well as the actual portrait of a Bloemfontein based performing and publishing poet by the name of Nthabiseng Jafta.  One of the reasons this photo was used is because one of the themes in her work resonates with what the artwork is about.  The white pigeons are a metaphor for the artist’s dream to see as many robust engagements as possible, however with as little or no violence at all.

The message behind the piece would be summed up as a call to tone down so much of the violence we see in our societies and engender peace as we continue to co-exist.
