Reduction lino cut
60 x 43 cm
R2 000
Description:
Life Before Death is a reduction linocut of two pomegranates in the foreground and vapor smoke in the background. In life there are always two types of choices. One that is positive and that will make your life better, and one that is negative that will not improve your life. In religious language, this is often called the choices of life and death. The pomegranates represent the choice of life that will result in abundance and joy, while the smoke represents the choice of death that results in chaos and decay. This work is a portrayal of the constant battle that rages between death and life in everyone’s lives. Death decreases life - the smoke causes the pomegranates to rot as the seeds are strewn across the floor. However, life pushes back against death - the smoke is pushed back by the radiant colours of the pomegranates. This work comments on that idea that whichever choice you make the most becomes the strongest presence in your life.
