Navigating Queer Desire
2021 Competition entry

Miró Van der Vloed
Details:
Not Signed
Porcelain slip casts and clay
42 x 31.5 x 10.5 cm
R7 500
Description:
This piece forms part of the queer utopian realm that is explored in the “holy viewfinder” piece. I drew inspiration from the ornately decorated pages of the storybooks I loved when growing up. The reflecting on my past as a means to navigate the future I would like to envision for myself and queer individuals across the world has become an important part of my conceptual process. The work maps out desire and the often treacherous routes queer individuals have to traverse in a world that is rife with discrimination and violence against those who do not fit into damaging societal norms. Sensual curves cover the central area of the work, like bodies they fit together in harmony the lines delineate more than is first apparent. As mentioned above, the fables and the magic of the stories and illustrations was influential to the piece. With the slip cast moulds I wanted to create a border containing a plethora of myth like moments that speak of love, sex, death, desire and loss. The moulds themselves were left with their seam lines unworked to highlight the unfinished state of the utopia I am attempting to construct.
