This is a depiction of how dependent the farmer is on nature. Diedré took a photograph of him while he watched the rain pouring down from heaven for the seventh consecutive day and knew how desperate he was to go back to work and how helpless he felt in his situation.  

He is a close friend of her and lost his daughter to a car accident about five years prior to the time she took the photo. She knew that not being able to work was torture to him, for his mind constantly dwelt on his deceased child.
