Description:
This artwork interrogates the ideology of masculinity. For generations, men have always been expected to conform to culturally defined standards in terms of their dressing style and appearance. Traditional norms of dressing for men have been thought of as being laid back, casual and even dull sense of personal style. Is it possible to be masculine and stylish? Or does doing so arise signs of feminism? In modern or contemporary society, a masculine style is based on being conserved whilst being confident and dominant. The lace flowers that are attached on the man’s outfit symbolize the beauty that most men are shy to showcase; fearing judgement of being perceived as a feminine trait. The denim details represent informality, to depict that the garment can be worn on a daily basis. The red velvet and leather fragments symbolize power and protection, emphasizing that men can still have authority and respect regardless of their eccentric personal dress code. The googly eyes are to challenge the societal norm of accepting the quirkiness of the man.
