Description:
The natural world has always been watching over the human race, but now, humanity has created another omnipotent force. This diptych aims to make the viewer aware of the watchful presence of both Mother Nature and Artificial Intelligence. In a rapidly digitising world, artificial intelligence has become the new surveyor. Although it is still in its infancy, its value is expected to grow twentyfold by 2030, resulting in a two trillion-dollar industry.

The development of AI will not only hold implications for us as a species but also for our planet’s overall biosphere. An increase in the production of digital devices and mechanised vessels for AI could have disastrous effects on the environment.

Using the age-old medium of handmade drawing charcoal and pit, I visualised a modern theme: the tension between the natural world and the digital realm. Charcoal is almost entirely made up of carbon, the same element that is largely responsible for living beings’ complex biological makeup, as well as the plastic components of digital devices. Through using charcoal and pit, I created an interconnected system that forms around humans, nature, and artificial intelligence.
