Helena De Waal
Details:
Not Signed
Ceramic
112 cm x 112 cm x 147 cm
Description:
In ‘Name changing object’ De Waal interrogates the patriarchal societal system which regulates the assigned roles of men and woman. Using the everyday object of a wedding dress, De Waal questions the notion that a woman has to take her husband’s surname upon marriage, thereby becoming his possession and an object to be used as he pleases. Through the fragile medium of ceramics, she emphasises the precariousness of socially designated roles and the instability of their continued existence.
