Imprinted Identity

2017 Competition entry

Leon Witthuhn

Details:
Not Signed
Ink
62 cm x 71 cm

Description:

This work of art reflects on our inherited or superficial human identity.

Leon received an antique stamp of the 'Imperial German Consulate, East London' from a family member as a reminder of his German heritage. Due to his German background he is often drawn into discussions about, among others, World War II, the Autobahn and German dialects. Examples of imprinted identity are, a black person who is not from South Africa who is approached and greeted by locals in Sesotho or Xhosa, or an Asian person who is approached with an assumption of little or no knowledge of English only to find that they are fluent and educated in English.

This self-portrait was created using only the stamp, the side of the stamp and black ink. The use of only the stamp reflects on the simplistic initial assumption of identity, without any real knowledge, that we imprint on others. The English Dictionary's definition of prejudice is a good description of imprinted identity: 'preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.'
