Description:

This artwork reflects upon Parmigianinos' Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror (1523-24). Jerry Saltz (2004:1) asks if Parmigianino's artwork could be the first selfie as it has traits of a selfie, such as the subjects face from a bizarre angle, the elongated arm, foreshortening and compositional distortion (2014:5). Masked reflections on the smiley/self(e) reflects on the selfie as a mask that we put on, a performance that we take part in, in which we play a role, put on a fake smile to present ourselves as someone that we think society wants us to be. These elements are present in the artwork through the use of different layers such as the sticker vinyl and oil paint that's applied on certain places on the sticker vinyl. These layers become like masks that the viewer needs to peel off to get to see the artist. The painting is of the artist after she put on a fake smile in front of the mirror by applying make-up.

The selfie also changes aspects of social interaction and self awareness amongst other things. Selfies declare : "I am here, look at me". By viewing Masked reflections on the smiley/self(ie) the viewers are looking at a painting of the artist as if reflected in a mirror that is on top of a mirror. In the process the viewers see their own reflections alongside that of the artists in the mirror. This creates a sense of self-awareness as the viewers becomes part of the artwork and are put on display. Not only does the viewer become part of the artwork, but he/she also plays an important part in the creation of the artwork. Selfies aren't created by artists and this also reflects upon the question: How big a role does the viewer play in the artwork?
