Description:

The artworks consist of two drawings, framed separately, in order to emphasise the division between the subjects. Even though the subjects are framed separately, the viewer is drawn into a suspicion of tension between them. The subjects are linked in terms of style and technique, yet they evoke doubt as to whether they are similar at all. This can be noticed in the facial expressions of the two figures, as well as the fact that they are looking away from each other.

The markings on the face on the right is the unclear map of a farm. This is a reference to heritage which could be conceptually linked to the letters on the other face. These letters refer to language which forms part of heritage. This reference to language, or descent, and locality, resembles important markers of identity.

These subjects have a pre-constructed identity thrust upon them. The idea of highlighting their personal identities can be noticed through the use of the farm map and the hidden words. One of the faces is interwoven with a map of the farm which is his birth right. His facial expression, however portrays clear disinterest in farm life, or farming as a career option. This could be the reason for his animosity towards others, as he is not only breaking away from his heritage, but also from those with whom he shares it.
