Description:
This photo poses a question to the viewer and attempts to lead the viewer to consider all the variables and emotions that the object, the mug and enamel plate, as well as its placement under the kitchen sink evoke.

Domestic workers of today work in a different era than their sisters of yesteryear but still remain some of the most exploited workers in the country. Although the effects of oppression on domestic workers have received enormous legislative attention, much of the focus has been on minimum wages, leave and general employment conditions. During Apartheid domestic workers and gardeners did not sit on their employers’ sofas, did not use their employers’ bathrooms and always drank coffee and tea from separate cups kept specially for them, yet 27 years later you still find the odd designated mug and plate under the sink in thousands of households. Desperate for employment many workers silently have to tolerate such treatment.

This unspoken practice continues as a result of different cultural, racial and generational views and is either justified in ignorance or opinionated and pompous belief or lambasted accordingly
