Description:

The human condition is defined as "the characteristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict, and mortality."

In the innermost of my being affective experiences oscillate between joy and agony, abundance and deprivation, alienation and belonging, disappointment and content, victory and failure, and melt into a symphony of life pursuing harmony between body, mind and spirit.

Looking back on my life journey of multiple physical and spiritual pathways, significant events and emotional experiences are expressed through burgeoning lines and folds of colour, resembling maps. Several lines are turning in on itself like a labyrinth, signifying confusion and intricacy. The re-configuring of past events and inner experiences (positive or negative) reveals the conducive value to a spiritual voyage of becoming. The coiled, intersected or tangled lines emerge as signs conveying meaning.

By connecting momentous events and encounters with others and our environments, each one of us is mapping a life story, which resonates with Eudora Welty’s  take on happenstances in our lives:

Events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order, in the continuous thread of revelation.

The meandering lines of the pathways created in the oil painting series, Feelings, imply a journey to trace and recontextualise past emotional experiences, suggesting the continuous flow of time in mind. The juxtaposition of brilliant and subdued colours as well as layered configurations, express the power and complexity of intense inner experiences, which alternate between encouraging emotions like expectation and excitement, and dismantling emotions like disappointment and doubt. Diverging feelings and thoughts may be exasperating and tiresome. These kind of experiences may leave deeper imprints on the human mind and are thus regarded as co-instrumental in the shaping of the sense of selfhood. 

By sharing actualised feelings I would like to encourage deepened appreciation of the miraculously created life on earth, and generate awareness of the significance of the human’s imprint, through word and action, on the environment (inclusive of other human beings and nature).
