Description:

Obey the rules is influenced by the concept of “liberation of mind”, where slavery is used as the main metaphor to comment on the South African education system. ‘Liberation of mind’ is a concept focusing on the current South African education system as well as the history of education since early colonialism (1652-2018).

The concept is explored in fine arts practice. In art practice, slavery is used as the main metaphor for the education system. The argument surrounding ‘liberation of mind’, states the complex ways in which people are enslaved by the education system. It opens people’s awareness and views on the issue, while they also become aware of their own sensitivity with regards to the plight of free education. The artwork Obey the rules is part of an ongoing series of liberation of mind concepts, and is influenced by the power of the media like in the #FeesMustFaII movement that took place in 2016.
