Description:
Ntho Tse SnaXXX is how we used to refer to anything that had a sexual connotation when I was growing up. It was taboo, something that is frowned upon which I believe shaped a lot of my peers and my view on sex well into puberty and adulthood. This series explores how we learn about and formulate ideas, understanding and identity through what we see, feel and experience when learning about sex, sexuality, gender, our bodies, identity and everything else that has to do with owning up to our sexual side.

Labels focuses on body and the labels assigned to it by society and individuals in a quest to identify who we are. One of the first things we are taught as children is the different parts that make up our body, like your nose feet and hands. This is done honestly and openly but when it comes to vaginas and penises there is a strange “birds and the bees” norm. In my opinion this fosters a strange culture of secrecy that creates room for all types of situations.

Sex education is important and complex especially in the South Africa where we find an alarming rate of teenage pregnancy, GBV, and issues related to how we get information and awareness on sex. Labels begs the question of how can society balance how we approach such topics to be healthy and informative without having it be considered profanity.
