Description:

This is a painting of an unnatural forest setting with elements of an Android Smartphone screen superimposed on top, so that the whole painting resembles a smartphone lock-screen. It was made during lockdown in 2020 and is a comment on how lockdown has affected people’s relationship with technology as people have become more reliant on it due to being stuck at home or in isolation.

This was inevitable as we needed our devices to keep the world functioning as best as possible, but this also amplified a problem that existed before the pandemic where there is a growing disconnection between younger generations and nature (the outside world). People especially the youth nowadays would rather have superficial and beautiful images of outside world events and interactions rather than going out and experiencing it for themselves. Hence the depiction of the android smartphone format for the painting and the unnatural looking forest scene that looks superficial and romanticized. The use of oil paint as a medium was a requirement from the course as this was a nature painting project but us as students were allowed to add external elements to the painting that will help strengthen its concept.
