Description:
Artwork by Katleho Lesige, Mamello Nkile and Ntlantla Mathokazi.
This work talks about gender-based violence, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its impact on our communities. I grew up in a small mining town that believes it’s alright to beat up women and kids, and that fighting is fine if the person crossed you or did something that you don’t like, and also to fight your emotions out. Talking is seen as a way of the cowards, the fear in little boys. I have seen more moments of violence than of love, more deaths than parties and more funerals than weddings because of this belief system that’s in Meloding, Virginia.
Mamello Nkile grow up in this environment with me, same as her ex-boyfriend who burnt her over a small misunderstanding that could have been solved over talking. We are exposed to the same condition and this image is a reflection of our community's imperfections and wrong thinking pattern.
I chose photography because it’s clear, open, and visible to understand and get the message quickly. There are no codes or redials in this image, what you see is the truth. I chose this frame because it’s mostly used in my community and it’s mostly used for inspirational certificates and important family members dead and alive, also for public figures. I chose to change its common use to serve a new artistic use where it frames the harsh imperfections realities of our community and the taboo conversations that we are avoiding as people and that GBV and PTSD are a heavy burden in our communities.
I believe we need more social workers, therapists, councilors, or any form of positive mental, emotional and soul orientated help in our schools, jobs, communities, TVs, radios, etc. By having them we can remove trauma, fear, and all forms of evil by just having someone that listens, cares, loves and gives solutions. LOVE IS THE ANSWER.
