Description:
Mimiek[-]Kunstenaar is a multimedia artwork that consists of a combination of performance, photorealism and photocollage. It entails multiple photographic and painterly layers of performative movement that has been interrupted. In these artworks Combrinck performs affective mime techniques of the mine artist through facial movements. These movements are recorded in various photo series and placed over each other in layers to create blurry, unclear reference images.

In Mimiek[-]Kunstenaar she uses a combination of painting and photography in each artwork. The photographic recordings are referred and repeated during the process by painting over the photographic prints (in 1, 3, 4 and 6) and using photo as reference. In 2 and 5 she used a photorealistic painting style as well as an expressionistic style (throughout the series) present in the abstract forms and colours and the use of expressive brushstrokes. The most important aspect is the use of various media during the production process – from the painterly marks to the embodied performative mime, to technological advanced digital equipment and technology.

The use of unclear, blurry images invites the spectator to look closer and engage with a representation of the artist.  In the process this creates a gap, that not only represents the physical distance between artist and spectator, but also a disturbance in the flow of dialogue.  The flow of dialogue, just like the flow of the artist's movements during the performance, gets interrupted.  This also reflects on modern mediums of communication, like the cellphone, and its shortcomings, such as the signal disappearing, airtime running out, etc. This also creates disturbances in the flow of the dialogue.  The dialogue becomes blurry, unclear and distorted, just like blurry images.
