New Breed Art Competition 2019: A total of 44 top artworks in line to win

A total of 44 artworks are now being showcased as part of the New Breed Art Competition Exhibition at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein.

Now in its fourth year, the competition is presented by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys in association with Oliewenhuis Art Museum.

At the official exhibition opening on the 17th of October 2019, Magdel Louw, competition coordinator, highlighted how many individuals have been involved in the competition for the past years. “Whether you participated as one of our expert judges to help identify new talent, or whether you as New Breed artists put yourselves out there to enter the competition, you have all played an important role in cementing this art competition as a growing presence to be taken seriously, not only in the Free State, but also in the wider art space of South Africa.

“In addition, if you as art lecturer trained, developed and nurtured the talent of our artists to help them reach new heights, you too played an essential role in establishing and continuously raising the standard of art in the province. And if you are one of the former winners that have emerged from the New Breed Art Competition and have grabbed the opportunity of benefitting from the invaluable mentorship offered through the competition, to push yourself even further by participating in the New Breed Winners Group exhibitions, you are now officially at the forefront of this building wave of innovation and excellence that is the inspiration for New Breed Art.”

The 44 works by 36 artists were selected after the New Breed Art Competition judging panel narrowed down the 107 entries received from all over the Free State. The result is a broad variety of styles and mediums, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, ceramic, and mixed media artworks that is on show and for sale till the 24th of November 2019.

An online exhibition is concurrently running to the physical exhibition on the New Breed Art Competition website at www.newbreedart.co.za, showing all the finalists for this year’s competition, as well as the respective artists’ profiles. The public will also play an active part in determining one of the five competition winners. The Public Choice Award will go to the artist who receives the most online votes on the official art competition website and will receive R10 000 in prize money.

Of the rest of the R100 000 prize money, R50 000 will be awarded to the winner, R20 000 to the Runner-up and R10 000 each to two Merit Award winners, as decided by the judges.
