Xany Jansen Van Vuuren graduated with a degree in languages at Rhodes Univerisity in 2003, after which she completed her MA in Language Practice at the University of the Free State in 2008. Currently she is completing her PhD in Language Practice, with specific focus on non-verbal communication and semiotics (the study of signs) and ecosemiotics, which is an investigation into the relationship and interaction between nature and culture.
Parallel with her academic career, her interest in photography grew out of her obsession with the ambiguity of meaning: what means one thing to one person, means something completely different to someone else. Her academic career and photography have merged with her interest in semiotics, and specifically ecosemiotics, in which she investigates the way in which nature is represented and symbolised in culture.
