Silent moments, meditative poses
2021 Competition entry

Gabriele Levi Jacobs
Details:
Signed
Plaster of paris
46 x 29 x 25 cm
R6 250
Description:
This sculpture is an aspirational monument of self-acceptance and self-love. The two heads of the bird are folded along its back, pressing into its round body, as if at rest. The smaller head is nuzzled in the crook of the others neck. The body of the bird when viewed from above resembles an anatomical heart shape. Throughout my life the artist has struggled with mental health problems and so the meditative crane is symbolic of being at peace with oneself. The materiality of the work is significant because plaster is often used as part of the process of sculpting, rather than as the final form (in his ceramic practice he regularly makes use of plaster for moulds). By using it as the medium, it reflects the ongoing nature of self-acceptance - a process, rather than a destination.
