Art student wins R50 000 by entering his 'Plan B'

Nkululeko Nkebe, who won the 2018 Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition, spoke to Volksblad's Maricelle Botha about the fascinating story behind how he ended up creating the artwork - Youth 'Slaves' To Education - that gave him the win.

While he originally intended to enter a bronze sculpture into the competition, an unexpected glitch lead to him entering his 'Plan B' - a sketch drawn entirely by pen.

"Everything went smoothly with my bronze sculpture, the mould stood ready. All I needed was the bronze. Bronze which I could find nowhere in Bloemfontein at that stage."

He relayed how his lecturer advised that, should he not get the bronze in time for the competition's entry date, he instead focus on his sketch.

In fact, Nkebe admitted that ever since his remarkable sketch lead to him winning this one-of-a-kind art competition, he has been motivated to develop his sketching ability further. "I even now have my eye on the Sanlam Portrait Award."
