New Breed Art Competition 2021: Nearly 50 artworks in line to win

Amid the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, Free State artists’ are showing ample drive to be discovered as new breed artists and accelerate their artistic careers.

A large total of 48 artworks by 40 upcoming Free State artists will be showcased as part of the New Breed Art Competition Exhibition at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein.

Now in its fifth year, the competition is presented by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys in association with Oliewenhuis Art Museum, the Art Bank of South Africa and the Free State Art Collective. This year’s competition exhibition also forms parts of the Vrystaat Arts Festival (Vryfees).
A variety of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, mixed media, as well as digital media artworks for the first time this year, are on show from 5 October to 14 November 2021. 

The public will play an active part in determining one of the five competition winners. The Public Choice Award will go to the artist who receives the most online votes on the official art competition website (www.newbreedart.co.za) and will receive R10 000 in prize money.

Of the rest of the R100 000 in prize money, R50 000 will be awarded to the winner, R20 000 to the Runner-up and R10 000 each to two Merit Award winners, as decided by the judges.

The winners will be announced on the 4th of November 2021.

To attend the exhibition opening at Oliewenhuis Art Museum on 5 October at 18:00, it is, due to Covid-19 protocols, compulsory to RSVP by Monday 4 October 2021. To RSVP, send an e-mail to olwh@nasmus.co.za and include all attendees' full names and ID numbers. Only e-mailed RSVPs will be accepted.
